Water Radio: Reading Camp is a series of literary kayak excursions directed by artist Fereshteh Toosi in collaboration with O, Miami Poetry Festival.

The November and December outings on Biscayne Bay will feature Climate Change Theatre Action plays, poetry, and eco-acoustics with an underwater microphone followed by a campfire and s’mores. Water Radio: Reading Camp is open to the public and launches monthly from Florida International University’s Biscayne Bay campus in north Miami.

The following CCTA plays will be presented:

Caridad Svich – A LETTER FROM THE OCEAN
Katie Pearl – THE EARTH’S BLUE HEART

Unlike a traditional book club, Water Radio: Reading Camp does not require homework, but instead celebrates the act of reading and exploring texts together. Participants engage in sensory inquiry and artful irreverence to foster a new range of cathartic and creative responses to ecological crisis. Toosi states, “The environment beneath the surface of Biscayne Bay is hidden, so changes in the health of our waterways are almost invisible to us. Listening to the soundscape underwater can reconnect people to this ecosystem which is struggling from leaking septic tanks, stormwater runoff, overfishing, warming temperatures, excess port traffic, and terrestrial development.”

Water Radio is funded in part by The Ellies, Miami’s visual arts awards, presented by Oolite Arts. Additional support is provided by the Office of the Provost at Florida International University. A percentage of ticket sales will be donated to the Miccosukkee environmental advocacy organization Love the Everglades.

There are discounts for students and seniors. If cost is a barrier, please contact the email listed in this link.
