November 27, 2025

A professional learning theatre workshop and performance of Here in the Long Now by Isla Cowan.

This workshop plus play performance event is designed to raise awareness amongst drama teachers and open conversations about possibilities for engaging students in learning about climate change and climate justice. The workshop focuses on performance-making processes as we create an interpretation of the selected play script within one 90-minute workshop session. Participants will work with spoken language, sound, movement, elements of chorus, symbol, and representation.

Significantly, the workshop and play reading focus on how theatre responds to the challenges of education in the climate era, can build community, and support learning in both drama and climate justice, with participants positioned as artists and activists.

The event also highlights and expands upon ‘Time to Act’ project, a partnership between Drama Victoria and Deakin University’s Centre for Regenerating Futures. It also connects to Drama Australia’s ‘Acting Green’ guidelines for sustainability in drama and theatre education. Teachers experiencing the workshop, play reading, and associated resources will be able to take this into their teaching practice with students in schools across Victoria.

The reading is facilitated and directed by Jo Raphael and Meg Upton. It will take place at the 2025 Drama Victoria Conference, Spotlight: Drama Education Stealing the Show, held on Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
